About Us

Hope for Zimbabwe Children (HFZC) is a registered charitable trust in Zimbabwe, officially established on August 6, 2020, in Harare. The organization traces its roots back to December 15, 2005, when its founder and current executive director, Violet Makunike, a Zimbabwean woman, made her first charitable donation. She contributed ZW$15,840,000 to the Mutemwa Leprosy Care Centre in Mutoko to provide Christmas groceries for the residents. At that time, Violet collaborated with Faith Chimanda, a volunteer she had never met, to ensure the adults at the center had a joyful holiday season. On July 20, 2006, Violet made another significant donation of ZW$90,000,000 to New Hope Zimbabwe Trust, also known as Defence For Children International Zimbabwe. This donation, facilitated through the trust’s founder and executive director, Elfas Zadzagomo-Shangwa, was used to pay school fees, purchase uniforms, and buy stationery and textbooks for orphaned children. Violet continued to support New Hope Zimbabwe with further cash donations in April 2007, November 2008, and May 2009, helping to cover the living expenses of children under the organization’s care.

Throughout these years, Violet sought out various charitable causes and individuals in need, financing these efforts with her personal salary. Eventually, she began hiring volunteers to help her reach more vulnerable children and adults in need. Her dedication and commitment to helping others culminated in the establishment of Hope for Zimbabwe Children in 2020. The organization is now well-known for its work alleviating the suffering of orphans, children, and adults in dire need, particularly those affected by poverty, disability, and health issues.

HFZC was founded in response to the socio-economic challenges in Zimbabwe , which have led to a severe shortage of basic social and health services, resulting in a national crisis.

The organization contributes to the protection of children and women and works to alleviate suffering out of respect for human dignity, offering care to those in precarious situations and facing significant challenges. When asked about the inspiration behind her charitable work, Violet attributes it to her upbringing in a Christian family and the influence of her kind and generous mother. After relocating to Canada in 2001, she felt a sudden calling to support the needy in her home country. She also cites the philanthropist Jairosi Jiri as a source of inspiration. Since then, Violet has remained steadfast in her commitment to supporting the underprivileged, becoming a notable philanthropist.

The founding philosophy of Hope for Zimbabwe Children (HFZC) is encapsulated in the acronym HOPE (Health, Opportunity, Protection, Equality ). This philosophy guides our person-centred, case-by-case approach, where we encourage individual choice and uphold the right of every person to express their preferences. Through this framework, we foster trust, responsibility, understanding, transparency, honesty, and accountability. Since its inception, HFZC has supported over 300 charitable causes and cases. Our beneficiaries not only receive essential services but also gain valuable knowledge through our programs. A key goal of HFZC is to create a secure and better future for vulnerable children by instilling them with HOPE, in line with our founding philosophy.

Our primary mission is to eliminate child neglect and abuse, child labour, child sexual abuse and exploitation, child poverty, child trafficking, drug abuse, and homelessness, while ensuring equal access to health and education opportunities for all children, regardless of ability.

In 2015, HFZC expanded its capacity by increasing both its workforce and charitable activities across many communities in Zimbabwe
. This growth has established HFZC as a prominent organization that provides critical support to children and citizens in poverty, particularly those who are ill. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demand for our services as more children have fallen into poverty due to the economic impact of the virus on family incomes. Our team of assessment practitioners and case workers, who volunteer their time, conduct community assessments and visits to raise awareness and ensure that the emotional, physical, and health needs of children and adults in impoverished areas are met.

To date, HFZC continues to assist children and adults with acute needs, serving as a valuable resource for vulnerable children by providing advice and support. We organize programs that include physical, educational, and other activities aimed at empowering children and women. Our belief is rooted in advancing the lives of children, young people, and adults by developing their skills, capacities, and capabilities, enabling them to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals. We strive to provide recreational and leisure activities that benefit children with disabilities or those from disadvantaged social and economic backgrounds, helping to improve their abilities and social standing.

Our programs remain focused on meeting community needs in areas such as health, education, and livelihoods, transforming the lives of children, their families, and the underprivileged communities we serve. To create lasting change, we also address the root causes of poverty, support marginalized communities, challenge social injustices, and advocate for the rights of those in need. We will continue working with communities to improve livelihoods, gain access to basic healthcare, increase access to clean water, and explore new strategies for survival.

Hope for Zimbabwe Children was founded on six guiding principles known as TRUTHA (Trust, Responsibility, Understanding, Transparency, Honesty, Accountability). These action-oriented principles reflect our core values and are central to our mission. They were established to address the social problems we aim to tackle and continue to shape our ethos today. Essentially, these principles form the foundation of our organization, guiding our decisions and actions while promoting ethical behaviour. They embody our fundamental beliefs about what is right and wrong and help us make informed and timely decisions in every aspect of our charity work.

Trust is at the heart of everything we do at Hope for Zimbabwe Children. We strive to deliver our services in a way that ensures those we work with are confident in our ability to meet expectations and fulfill our promises. We want our partners and beneficiaries to believe in our mission, to see us as trustworthy, and to know that we are reliable and effective. Our commitment to transparency is key to building these trusting relationships, which begins with clear and open communication.

We are proactive, available, and authentic, qualities that instill confidence in our beneficiaries and partners. Trust is a crucial asset in our work, essential for treating others with dignity and fostering long-term relationships. Our beneficiaries and partners continue to return to us because they trust us and know we treat them with respect, which in turn increases public trust in our organization.

Responsible use of funds is a cornerstone of our work. We train our staff to understand that trust is essential for collaboration, the free exchange of ideas, and fostering a productive and progressive workplace culture. By upholding our reputation and commitment through trust, we position ourselves as a model of integrity and competence, consistently following and applying ethical values and principles in all aspects of our work.

To maintain this trust, we ensure that all funds are used responsibly and that every expenditure is meticulously recorded. Transparency in financial matters is crucial because the public wants to know how their contributions are being used to make a difference in the lives of our beneficiaries and the communities we serve.

Hope for Zimbabwe Children (HFZC) has a social responsibility to fulfill our mission for the public benefit. We are committed to taking responsibility for our actions and acknowledging our mistakes. The interests of our beneficiaries and the causes we support are at the core of everything we do, and this commitment is shared by everyone who works and volunteers with us.

We operate within the framework of our charity’s constitution or trust deed, adhering to the agreed aims and objectives of our organization, and following the established rules and principles for how we are run. Charity is fundamentally a voluntary act of providing financial or material assistance to those in need. Our strategic approach emphasizes taking responsibility for our actions and decisions, ensuring they align with our mission of selfless giving.

Our purpose is to serve the most vulnerable groups in society, providing them with support and advice to ensure their basic needs and human rights are met. For example, by offering services and programs focused on gender-based violence interventions, HFZC aims to reduce the number of women affected by domestic violence and dying during childbirth. As part of these efforts, we provide reproductive health training and voluntary family planning advice, recognizing the significant health benefits these measures can offer in reducing maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Preventing unwanted pregnancies and spacing births by at least two years can have a profound impact on reducing maternal and child mortality, which is another key aspect of our work.

Our programs also focus on preventing and responding to cases of gender-based violence, a responsibility that drives our purpose and aligns with our vision. We believe that by fulfilling our social responsibility, we can create lasting positive changes in the lives of those we serve.

We have a clear understanding of our mission, purpose, and vision, as well as our founding philosophy, principles, and values. These elements shape how we implement our activities and guide our decision-making process. We deeply appreciate and comprehend the challenges faced by vulnerable children and adults, and we have developed strategies that serve as solutions for those in need. Our ability to empathize allows us to understand and share the feelings of others, putting ourselves in their positions and experiencing their emotions alongside them.

We are also mindful of the moral values, religions, customs, traditions, and cultures of the communities we serve. This understanding helps us respect the integrity of everyone we work with, ensuring that children, youth, and women have the opportunity to maximize their potential and become advocates for change, promoting social justice within their communities. We recognize that children are raised within the communities we serve, so to achieve our objectives, it is essential to collaborate with families to drive change. We are aware of how resource shortages can impact our work and our beneficiaries. Therefore, to fulfill our mission and vision, we emphasize the importance of partnership and collaboration in maintaining our purpose. By working together, we can better serve those in need and create lasting, positive changes in the communities we support.

Transparency is a powerful force that Hope for Zimbabwe Children (HFZC) embraces to strengthen our relationships with donors, build public trust, and maximize our impact on the communities we serve. Our commitment to ethical transparency is embedded in all aspects of our work and is consistently applied to prevent misuse of donor funds by staff, volunteers, or beneficiaries.

Transparency entails openness, communication, and accountability, which HFZC actively promotes to avoid creating a toxic and unproductive working environment. During our campaigns, we demand transparency to combat corruption, improve governance, and promote accountability. When fundraising, we are upfront about our goals and expectations, ensuring that everyone involved understands what to expect, thereby staying true to our words. We provide donors with detailed information about the organization’s financial health, overhead costs, and fundraising efficiency, allowing them to make informed decisions about their contributions.

For us, transparency also means that our staff can see what their peers are working on and understand how their work impacts the rest of the organization. This knowledge helps staff prioritize their tasks, work more effectively, and find opportunities to support their colleagues.

Workplace transparency is crucial and actively encouraged in our organization. This involves open communication between leadership and staff, where leadership is committed to sharing expectations, mistakes, setbacks, feedback, revenue, and other metrics openly. In return, staff are encouraged to ask questions and share their feedback, challenges, ideas, and suggestions. By operating under a transparent open-door policy, our staff are free to have honest conversations with management and contribute to creating and maintaining a coherent system for gathering and recording information.

We are committed to supporting individuals and communities by addressing social, environmental, and humanitarian issues, always striving to make a positive impact on the world with honesty and integrity. As an organization that often relies on donations and volunteers to fulfill our mission, we implement our activities and programs through transparent and ethical practices.

We value building honest relationships that transform lives and communities, inspiring change for the public good. Honesty is the guiding principle that gives meaning and value to our charitable efforts, highlighting the deep connection between truth and charity. For us, truth is a cornerstone of our work, and through this strong link, our charity work is recognized as a genuine expression of humanity and a vital component of human relationships.

Charity can only truly shine when it is grounded in truth, and it is in this spirit that we speak honestly to everyone we work with and to those we serve. Ethical practice requires us to address social problems truthfully, and our standards of proficiency are rooted in honesty and trustworthiness. Our actions are guided by a truth-based approach that prioritizes the best interests of those we serve. While providing humanitarian assistance and care, we adhere to honest practices that align with our mission and vision, ensuring that we remain true to our words. We also emphasize the importance of honesty and truthfulness in our training, equipping our staff to uphold these values in their work.

Hope for Zimbabwe Children is committed to being accountable for all our activities, in line with our mission, organizational performance, finances, and legal obligations. We understand that a lack of accountability can erode public trust in charitable work. Our organization is continuously evaluated based on our performance and behaviour in relation to our responsibilities. To ensure accountability, we train our staff to meet performance expectations, complete tasks on time, and work together productively and efficiently. Every staff member is responsible for their actions, behaviours, performance, and decisions, which fosters a high level of commitment and morale, leading to improved performance.

Accountability creates a positive working environment where staff feel that everyone is contributing towards shared goals. While some may shy away from accountability due to fear of failure, judgment, or consequences, we emphasize a positive approach to accountability, recognizing that negativity can be a significant barrier to accepting responsibility. Prioritizing accountability and cost-effectiveness is essential in our work, and we advocate for reform in child and adult social care to address the lack of additional funding needed to support struggling services. Our staff are trained to work effectively within limited resources, always appreciating and accepting responsibility for their actions and decisions. We are keenly aware that we are accountable to the citizens we serve, our donors, and the legal frameworks governing our organization and country.

Transparency and accountability are key commitments to the people we serve, our donors, and potential funding partners. We are dedicated to being transparent with the local communities we work with, our partner organizations, local governments, and our supporters. Transparency involves not only being open about our financial matters and how we allocate the funds we raise but also demonstrating how we embody our values in our actions. We share detailed information about our projects and publish financial reports to show our commitment to openness and transparency in all aspects of our work. This framework promotes and requires government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other entities involved in community development to be transparent, accountable, and participatory. We acknowledge the uncertainty in decision-making due to unpredictable resources, which can impact resource availability. Despite these challenges, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency in everything we do.

At Hope for Zimbabwe Children we are committed to the feeling of responsibility that we have towards the mission, vision and purpose of our organization. Our core values are anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice, commitment, empathy, empowerment, excellence, professional integrity, reliability, respect, social justice and service to humanity and teamwork.

At Hope for Zimbabwe Children, we are deeply committed to the responsibility we feel towards our organization’s mission, vision, and purpose. We are dedicated to advancing our cause with a strong focus on quality and excellence in all aspects of our work. We believe that productivity stems from a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort; thus, dedication is essential for achieving success. We train our staff to demonstrate commitment in several ways: by being punctual, which shows respect and professionalism toward the organization and those we serve; by meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work; by displaying leadership qualities; by seeking feedback to improve their performance; by acquiring new skills; by volunteering to assist wherever needed; and by sharing innovative ideas. We encourage our staff to be fully committed to their work to ensure positive outcomes for our beneficiaries. Commitment drives our team to perform their tasks and responsibilities effectively, helping our organization reach its goals and make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

At the heart of our organization lies a commitment to anti-oppressive behaviour, which embodies an empowering, person-centred approach. This approach enables individuals to take control of their lives and make informed choices, thereby fostering genuine empowerment. By mainstreaming gender equality issues, we encourage self-reliance while promoting and protecting human dignity, ultimately aiming to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations. Our values encourage the development of collaborative partnerships that prevent the abuse of power and identify effective strategies for overcoming societal barriers that perpetuate social exclusion. We advocate for anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practices rooted in ethical principles that champion justice, rights, and economic well-being. Additionally, we raise awareness of the impact of culture, equality, and diversity in all our initiatives.

We prioritize effective listening, promote informed choices, and advocate for independent living. Our approach intertwines self-awareness with an understanding of the cultural influences in the lives of the people we serve, ensuring that we do not impose our own values. This respect for individual experiences is critical to good practice. As part of this commitment, our staff receive training in cultural competence and are encouraged to recognize mono-culturalism as a significant factor in discriminatory practices.

Sensitivity to diverse cultures is a crucial element of Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP). We believe that empowerment fosters respect for human dignity and diversity. Therefore, our team is dedicated to engaging with individuals in a way that honours their uniqueness, experiences, expertise, and self-determination. We recognize that the failure to explore and understand cultural dynamics can lead to oppression and discrimination; hence, cultural sensitivity is essential for effective charitable work. We are also committed to anti-racist practices and actively ensure that our professional power is not built on racist assumptions. Our commitment extends to promoting equality of persons and opportunity, regardless of social identity. We advocate for equality and social inclusion, striving to ensure that all community members—irrespective of gender, age, abilities, race, culture, language, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status—have equal opportunities to engage in community development processes and access social and economic benefits. Above all, we are passionate about ensuring that every child experiences a safe and happy childhood. Our inclusivity is a cornerstone of our work, and we tirelessly strive to ensure that all children are welcomed and included.

Empathy is a fundamental aspect of our values and serves as a core principle that connects our organization with our beneficiaries and the communities we serve. By demonstrating empathy, we create a more compassionate society where individuals feel heard, respected, and supported. This is particularly vital as we work with vulnerable populations; by cultivating empathy, we increase the likelihood of offering meaningful help and compassion. In practicing empathy, we contribute to a more inclusive society. This creates an environment where everyone feels valued and understood, fostering diversity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. As we celebrate the unique perspectives and experiences within our communities, we cultivate empathy and strengthen the fabric of our shared humanity.

Our commitment to empathy extends beyond words; we actively engage in acts of kindness by participating in community service projects, allowing us to connect with others and make a positive difference in their lives. These initiatives not only nurture kindness but also have a profound impact on fostering empathy throughout the community. Education and awareness are powerful tools for cultivating empathy. We advocate for incorporating empathy education into school curricula, helping individuals develop this essential trait from an early age. In our workplace, training programs teach staff to understand individuals from their perspective, encouraging them to imagine others’ feelings, perceptions, and thoughts.

Effective communication is enhanced through empathy, which fosters respectful, honest discourse. By cultivating empathy, we create a society where individuals feel heard, validated, and supported, ultimately building stronger relationships based on trust and understanding. Listening and validating the experiences of others strengthens the bonds between individuals. We encourage our staff to practice emotional empathy, promoting emotional well-being and creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable expressing their emotions. This practice improves our communication skills, enabling us to engage in more meaningful and productive conversations. By actively listening and understanding diverse viewpoints, we can work collaboratively towards mutually beneficial solutions and minimize conflict.Self-awareness is a crucial component of empathy. By recognizing and understanding our own emotions and experiences, we can more effectively relate to others. This reflective practice allows us to empathize deeply with the experiences of others, avoiding judgments and assumptions while acknowledging the multiple perspectives that exist.

Cultivating empathy is essential for establishing a caring and understanding society. Through understanding and practicing empathy within ourselves, our relationships, and our communities, we make a positive impact on the world around us. Empathy strengthens relationships, promotes emotional well-being, enhances communication skills, reduces conflict, and contributes to a more inclusive society. Our staff embody empathy in their interactions and actively work to foster it within our communities. Hope for Zimbabwe Children (HFZC) is deeply committed to social justice and service to humanity, recognizing these as fundamental values in our mission. We consider it our ethical responsibility to promote individual growth, challenge social exclusion, and address the societal issues that contribute to social injustice. Ultimately, our vision is to promote equality of opportunity, particularly for the most vulnerable children and women. Through a steadfast commitment to human rights, we aim to foster an environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute to a just society.

Hope for Zimbabwe Children’s operating principle of teamwork is fundamental to our effective professional practice. By collaborating, we enhance our ability to provide care and protection, allowing us to achieve our goals more swiftly and efficiently. We understand that the power of collaboration, working together towards a common objective, leads to the best outcomes for both our beneficiaries and our organization. Teamwork is more than just a concept; it is the driving force that transforms dreams into reality. By sharing responsibilities, we foster a sense of community and collective purpose, ensuring that our efforts align for the greater good. Our combined strengths become amplified, magnified, and celebrated, resulting in productive outcomes.

We place a high value on human capital and recognize the importance of healthy, productive relationships in our humanitarian work. This commitment extends to fostering relationships within the community and nurturing connections between community groups and external institutions over time. We acknowledge that meaningful change cannot be realized through the efforts of one person or organization alone. It requires the commitment and collaboration of individuals and organizations working in unison to pursue our mission and achieve our vision. In summary, HFZC believes in the transformative power of teamwork, where collective effort and strong relationships pave the way for impactful change and the fulfilment of our goals.
